Mount Mogan, renowned for its “summer resort”, is also precious in other seasons. Especially in March

and April, as forests start to grow and tender bamboo shoots crop up, wild vegetables show their vitality vigorously. It is such a pleasure to hike and dig bamboo in Mount Mogan in spring.

Guests in Cloud Mirror are so lucky to enjoy a fun spring in an open air~ The hill adjacent to Cloud Mirror parking has a gentle slope. The fresh air gives the best reason for urban travelers to linger around. Let’s start our journey of marching and bamboo shoots digging from Cloud Mirror!

The bamboo shoots digging starts from the path built by Cloud Mirror next to its parking.

The entrance is decorated by towering trees of the freshest green. The mottled sunshine just gives an additional flavor to this enjoyment.

Along the footpath, there are robust bamboos on both sides (that’s why we may dig beautiful bamboo shoots~). The leaves whistling with the wind going by play a spring concerto.

Digging Bamboo Shoots ◆ Hoeing back and forth is a hands-on fun.

Hiking is not the challenging part, but digging bamboo shoots requires both physical and technical conditions. According to the butler of Cloud Mirror, some of the guests won’t come down the hill until they have harvested more than ten or even twenty jin of bamboos, while others can gain only one piece or two after hours of hard search. Bending all the time to look for the barely emerging bamboo shoots demand tremendous strength.

For digging bamboo shoots, on one hand, you’ve got to have good eyes, so that it is easier to find the bamboo shoots; on the other hand, you should be equipped with proper techniques: probing with your soles while walking around. Once you kick on something sharp and stiff, you may probably come across a spring bamboo shoots. We would like to share with you a secret that remains in the bamboo circle: the bamboo shoots that are still buried in the earth can be fresher and more tender than the exposed ones.

Once the bamboo is located, excavate the earth on one side, make sure of the hoeing point and the distance, sever the root with one powerful cut, and then harvest it as the hoe comes up.

This process can be tiring and difficult, but most people come to Mount Mogan for the fun of digging bamboo shoots. Some hands-on practice gives us an opportunity to live a happy rural life. Don’t you agree with that?
